The Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center (MAPC)

MAPC at Barrow Neurological Institute works to empower the PD community to take action toward improving their physical, social, and emotional well-being. MAPC’s signature Expressive Arts Program was developed in 2008, with the goal of fostering creativity and providing an avenue for artistic expression. Since its beginning, the program has revealed multiple benefits for participants such as reduced anxiety, increased sense of achievement and self-worth, and social bonding.

Quotes from participants in our Expressive Arts Workshops:

I love painting…In spite my shaking hands, I can do wonderful things.”   – Juana Flores

When I draw or paint, I am amazed by what I am able to achieve. This gives me courage to continue moving forward. I feel happy and proud of my achievements.” – Corina Villalobos

Painting is therapy for me. It helps me feel relaxed, and it is something that I can do on my own to manage my disease.” – Carlos Rivera

I did not think I could paint! And here they have taught me that I can if I want to…And I am proud of my paintings.”– Patricia Fuller

Painting is an art that I never dared to try before. Nevertheless, since the very beginning, it has helped me with my stress and with my overall health. I am thankful because the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center allows caregivers like me to be part of the art programs.” – Luz Maria Hernandez
